Ornaceratops (Ornament Triceratops) Crochet Pattern

Hooked for the Holidays Day 8

Day 8 is Reindeer-o-saurus’ best friend, the Ornament Triceratops! While this dino friend does require some sewing, it still comes together quickly. He’s perfect for decoration or as a gift for your dinosaur loving friends. The best part? You can make him in any color, so let your creativity run wild.

Materials

Abbreviations

This pattern is written in US Terms and worked in continuous rounds.

  • MR - magic ring

  • sc - single crochet

  • inc - increase

  • dec - invisible decrease

  • cc - color change

  • sl st - slip stitch

  • hdc - half double crochet

  • dc - double crochet

  • FO - fasten off

  • BOB - bobble (5 loops on hook)

Ornament Body

Start in Gold

  • R1: 6sc in MR (6)

  • R2: BLO 6sc (6)

  • R3: 6sc (6)

    • cc to red

  • R4: FLO 6 inc (12)

  • R5: (1sc, inc) x 6 (18)

  • R6: (2sc, inc) x 6 (24)

  • R7: (3sc, inc) x 6 (30)

  • R8: 30sc (30)

  • R9: (2sc, inc, 2sc) x 6 (36)

  • R10: 36sc (36)

    • cc to green

  • R11-R12: 36sc (36) (2 rounds)

    • cc to red

  • R13: (2sc, dec, 2sc) x 6 (30)

  • R14: (2sc, dec) x 3, 1sc, BOB, dec, 2sc, dec, 1sc, BOB, dec, 2sc, dec, BOB, 1sc (23)

  • R15: 4sc, BOB, (3sc, dec) x 3, 3sc (20)

    • Stuff firmly.

  • R16: (1sc, dec) x 6, 2sc (14)

  • R17: 7 dec (7)

    • Finish stuffing. FO and sew the remaining hole closed.

To finish the ornament, attach gold yarn to one side of R1. Ch 4, then sl st to the other side. FO and weave in ends.

Head

Make in red

  • R1: 6sc in MR (6)

  • R2: 6 inc (12)

  • R3: (1sc, inc) x 6 (18)

  • R4-R5: 18sc (18) (2 rounds)

  • R6: FLO (sc, [hdc, dc], [dc, hdc]) x 3, 9 sl st (21)

    • Stitches in […] should be made in the same stitch

  • R7: in the unused back loops of R5, (1sc, dec) x 6 (12)

    • FO and leave a long tail for sewing (don’t sew the remaining hole closed).

    • Insert safety eyes on either side of the MR between R2-3. Stuff firmly.

  • To add the horns, attach white yarn to R2, ch 2, then sc in the second ch from hook. Repeat in R5 in front of the frills on both sides, with approx 3 visible stitches between them.

Tail

Make in Red

  • R1: 4sc in MR (4)

  • R2: (1sc, inc) x 2 (6)

  • R3: 6sc (6)

  • R4: (1sc, inc) x 3 (9)

  • R5: (2sc, inc) x 3 (12)

  • R6: 2sc, 4 inc, 6sc (16)

    • FO and leave a tail for sewing. Stuff lightly.

Assembly

  • Sew the head to the side opposite the color changes, over R8-12

  • Sew the tail to the side opposite the head, with the increases facing up. Sew over approximately R8-12, in line with the head.

  • Add stuffing to both as you go if needed.
